Squaretrade © ap6.0. Very good condition soviet union order of the patriotic war, 1st class (in gold) type iii. Excellent condition to face enamel and gold wash to central and outer features. A lovely piece indeed, individually numbered 1785732. Screwback disc to reverse. A very honoured award for combat gallantry. History these badges weer issued as a result of the need for an award for soldiers who displayed acts of gallantry in the face of the invading german enemy during the great patriotic war (ww2). These were often seen worn on the chest of soviet heroe's during the second world war, especially during the fierce and savage battles of leningrad and stailingrad. I also have the silver 2nd class version of this bdage for sale.

The order of the patriotic war was instituted as an official award on the 20th may 1942 and was awarded to all soldiers in the soviet armed forces, security troops, and to partisans for heroic deeds during the great patriotic war. In 1985 during the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the great patriotic war, it was decided that all surviving veterans of the war would be awarded either 2nd or 1st class of the order.
